Artist Statement by Juno Garcia "Juno Garcia. Jefferson County International Baccalaureate. El nopal florece-(The prickly pear blooms), El nopal florece is an original comedic piece by me that brings attention to the fact that many Mexicans often begin to deny their culture once gentrification or even bullying has become present in their lives. In Mexican culture, it is very common to jokingly make fun of one another as a way to show comfort and taunt each other around, this is where my piece comes in place., "Nopal en la frente" is a common phrase said which translates to "Prickly pear on the forehead". The phrase means that there is no way to deny your Mexican origin, like it or not you are Mexican. Furthermore, my art piece is meant to symbolize the irony and beauty of the topic in general. I hope people notice the ethnic Aztec nose on the pot as well as the expression on the girl's face: annoyed, mad, while also looking a bit upset. "

Science you can taste! Today, JCIB 9th graders tackled sensory science using a blind Froot Loops taste test. Blindfolded students tried to identify the "different" fruit flavors by color. They then worked together to document their findings.

Special shout out to Mrs. Williams for providing such engaging (and delicious) lesson for our students!
