CLAY, Ala. — At Clay-Chalkville Middle School (CCMS), the future of healthcare is taking shape as students discover the power of leadership, service, and opportunity through Jr. HOSA – Future Health Professionals.
What began with zero members during the previous school year has grown into a thriving chapter of 99 student members, marking an exciting milestone for healthcare career exploration and student leadership at CCMS.
HOSA – Future Health Professionals is an international student-led organization dedicated to preparing future healthcare professionals through education, leadership development, community service, and competitive events. Jr. HOSA introduces middle school students to these opportunities, encouraging them to explore healthcare careers while developing essential life skills.
Under the guidance of Dr. Kina Kay Phillips, DNP, RN, Health Science Teacher and Jr. HOSA Chapter Advisor, the CCMS chapter is creating opportunities for students to discover their interests, develop confidence, and understand the importance of serving others.
“My goal as the Jr. HOSA Chapter Advisor is to expose students to opportunities they may not have otherwise considered and help them recognize their potential,” said Dr. Phillips. “I want them to understand that leadership begins with attitude and a heart for service. Leadership is not simply about holding a title; it is about how you treat others, the example you set, and your willingness to make a difference.”
Through hands-on healthcare activities, career exploration, leadership opportunities, and community service initiatives, students are learning that healthcare extends far beyond hospitals and doctors’ offices. The chapter also emphasizes mental health awareness, compassion, academic achievement, and the importance of making a positive impact within the school and surrounding community.
Students have opportunities to participate in HOSA competitive events, strengthen communication and problem-solving skills, and apply classroom knowledge in science, mathematics, and healthcare to real-world situations.
The chapter’s motto, “Leading with HEART,” reflects its commitment to developing compassionate, responsible, and service-minded young leaders.
For Dr. Phillips, the chapter’s rapid growth represents more than an increase in membership. It reflects students’ willingness to explore new possibilities, challenge themselves, and become part of something meaningful.
“I hope to plant seeds of confidence, compassion, and purpose that will continue to grow long after students leave my classroom,” Phillips shared.
As CCMS Jr. HOSA continues to grow, its mission remains clear: to inspire students to pursue opportunities, embrace leadership, promote wellness, and understand that even at a young age, they have the ability to make a difference.
With 99 members and a growing commitment to service and leadership, Clay-Chalkville Middle School is helping prepare students not only for future careers in healthcare but also for a lifetime of positive impact.
