JEFCOED Important Update - April 1, 2023

JEFCOED Family,

As we wrap up what I hope was a wonderful spring break, I must inform you of a situation.  I will be as transparent as possible.  My intention is to tell you what we know and not speculate.

The Jefferson County School System was the victim of a ransomware attack during Spring Break. Our district’s technology team took immediate steps to stop the attack and then notified state and local authorities. Preliminary investigations have not revealed any evidence of a breach of sensitive personally identifiable information.  However, we will continue to investigate any possibility of compromised data and notify stakeholders accordingly if discovered. We have engaged outside cybersecurity experts and law enforcement officials to assist.

Our district uses multiple security protocols including filtering, firewalls, and antivirus systems. These systems were able to assist us in mitigating the attack early.  Out of an abundance of caution, we have taken all network systems down to investigate thoroughly. These networks will be reconnected as we take steps to ensure all traces of malware are gone.

We look forward to seeing our students on Monday, April 3rd.  While there will be a disruption of typical phone and internet service, schools will have access to phones for emergency communication.  You should expect further updates as our investigation continues.

Sincerely,

Dr. Walter B. Gonsoulin

Superintendent
