Jefferson County Schools offer opportunities for dual enrollment throughout the district. Dual enrollment opportunities provide students with experiences that may grant them both high school and college credit while in high school.

• Dual Enrollment – courses offered at two-year & four-year institutions that count toward high school graduation
  credit and college credit.

• Accelerated High School – courses offered at two-year institutions that DO NOT count toward high school
  graduation credit.

Students should work with their counselor and clarify with the postsecondary institution which program they are applying to before beginning coursework. Some programs allow students to take these courses at the high school campus taught by either a visiting college instructor or a high school instructor serving as an adjunct for the postsecondary institution. Other programs allow students to take courses on the college campus with postsecondary instructors. Participation requirements and awarding of college credit for dual enrollment are determined by the partner institution and not the local school. Tuition, textbooks, and fees are determined and assessed by the partner institution and not the local school. Students must follow all partner institution guidelines and requirements for attendance, academic integrity, and work completion in order to receive high school credit for the course. Students taking any dual enrollment course receive an additional quality point added to the GPA for grades earned in the course. The grade point average earned in a dual enrollment or early college course is applicable to both the high school GPA and the collegiate GPA.

Students wishing to have dual enrollment credit count on their high school transcript must get prior approval from their high school counselor to take the dual enrollment course. Students who take dual enrollment courses without prior approval run the risk of having the credit not count towards high school graduation. Students interested in participating in dual enrollment opportunities in Jefferson County should complete the Jefferson County Dual Enrollment Application (Appendix 1) and return the application to the local school counselor for approval.

Jefferson County Schools have dual enrollment agreements with the following institutions:

• Two-Year Colleges: Jefferson State Community College, Bevill State Community College, Lawson State Community College, and Wallace State Community College;

• Four-Year Colleges: Auburn University, UAB, University of Alabama, Jacksonville State University, Judson College, the University of Montevallo, and Troy University.

Each community college serves specific high schools in the district. Schools with students interested in taking dual enrollment coursework at any other institution not listed here or not in their service area must seek approval from the Department of Curriculum and Instruction at the central office.
