About Our School
School History
Mortimer Jordan High School is located in Kimberly, AL, serving students in grades 9 through 12.
Our school is named after Captain Mortimer Harvie Jordan. Captain Jordan, a war hero, lost his life in World War I. He was a soldier, officer, and physician. As commanding officer of Company K, 167th Infantry, 42nd Rainbow Division, he was wounded while leading his sector in battle. He died of his wounds in 1918 and is buried in Arlington National Cemetery.
The original Mortimer Jordan High School building opened its doors during the fall of 1920 in Morris, Alabama, with an enrollment of ninety students. The original building of five rooms soon became inadequate, and a frame building of eight rooms was added. Between the years of 1937 and 1941, indoor plumbing and restrooms were installed. The 'old gym' was built by the WPA during 1936-37, and the 'new gym' was added in 1968. During the early 1950s, a football and athletic field was constructed. During the 1960s, Gardendale-based students attending MJHS were phased out after the construction of Gardendale High School south of Morris. In the fall of 2004, North Jefferson Middle School opened for grades 6-8, making Mortimer Jordan a true 'high school' consisting of grades 9-12.
Mortimer Jordan High School was relocated to a new building in Kimberly, Alabama, in the fall of 2011. The Class of 2020 was the 100th graduating class of MJHS.
Mortimer Jordan High School is and will always be a cornerstone of the community.
