Update your Chromebook's operating system

Your Chromebook automatically checks for and downloads updates when connected to Wi-Fi or Ethernet.

Finish an update

  1. When your Chromebook downloads a software update, look for the "Update available" notification.

  2. Select Restart to Update.

  3. Your Chromebook will restart and update.

Note: To learn more about the newest Chromebook features, in the "Update available" notification, select Learn more about the latest Chrome OS update.

If you use your Chromebook at work or school:

When your Chromebook downloads a software update, the notification will be colored:

  • Blue: An update is recommended.

  • Orange: An update is required.

  1. Select Restart to update.

  2. Your Chromebook will restart and update.

Check for updates yourself

  1. Turn on your Chromebook.

  2. Connect your Chromebook to Wi-Fi.

  3. At the bottom right, select the time.

  4. Select Settings .

  5. At the bottom of the left panel, select About Chrome OS.

  6. Under "Google Chrome OS," you'll find which version of the Chrome operating system your Chromebook uses.

  7. Select Check for updates.

  8. If your Chromebook finds a software update, it will start to download automatically.

Note: If your Chromebook uses your phone's internet connection or its own mobile data, you'll get an alert about how much mobile data it needs to update. You can then stop or continue with the update.

What information goes to Google when you update

When your Chromebook checks for updates, it sends some information to Google, like the computer’s version number and language. This information isn't associated with you or your Google Account.

Reset your Chromebook hardware

To fix some Chromebook problems, you might need to reset your Chromebook hardware, also called a hard reset.

Try a hard reset only after other ways to fix the problem have failed. It will restart your Chromebook hardware (like your keyboard and touchpad), and might delete some files in your Downloads folder.

Hard reset your Chromebook

For most Chromebooks, follow the steps below:

  1. Turn off your Chromebook.

  2. Press and hold Refresh  + tap Power. 

  3. When your Chromebook starts up, release Refresh .

On tablets: Press the Volume Up and Power buttons for at least 10 seconds, then release them.

Other ways to hard reset

For some Chromebooks, you reset the hardware by pressing a special reset button, unplugging the power cable, or removing and re-inserting the battery. If you see your device in this list, follow the steps to reset its hardware.

"This webpage is not available"
This message means Google Chrome couldn't find and load the webpage you're trying to visit. To fix the problem, try the steps below.
Check the web address

If you see the message "ERR_NAME_NOT_RESOLVED" or "ERR_CONNECTION_REFUSED" in your browser window, try these steps:

  1. Check the web address (URL) in the address bar to make sure you're going to the right webpage.

  2. If you are, try to open the same webpage on another computer connected to the same network.

  3. If you can't see the webpage on any computer, check if you're connected to the Internet. If you are, the webpage might be down.

Delete your cookies

Cookies are files created by websites you've visited to store browsing information, such as your profile or preferences for the website. Sometimes, a broken cookie file can cause errors.

  1. On your computer, open Chrome .

  2. At the top right, click More 

  3. Select More tools > Clear browsing data

  4. Select a time range > Cookies and other site data > Clear data.

Change your proxy settings

If the browser takes a long time to load a webpage or search, it might be using a web proxy. If you see the message "Resolving proxy" or "ERR_PROXY_CONNECTION_FAILED" in your browser window, you can change your proxy settings.

  1. At the bottom right, select the time.

  2. Select Settings .

  3. In the "Network" section, select the network you're using.

  4. Select the network name again.

  5. Select Proxy.

  6. Change your proxy settings.

Changing your proxy settings might break your connection to the web. If you're not sure what settings to use, contact your network administrator. Also, proxies that need to be authenticated don't work with Chromebooks.

Note: If you're using your Chromebook at work or school, you won't be able to change your proxy settings. For more help, contact your administrator.

Chromebooks 101: How to take screenshots on your Chromebook

Screenshots can be useful for a variety of reasons. For example, you can send copies of error messages to support services, show a friend what your game screen looks like, or save a tweet that you suspect is going to be deleted in a few minutes. Today’s laptops all include ways to take screenshots, and that includes Chromebooks.

Chromebooks can be a little confusing for someone coming from another platform, especially because their keyboards are somewhat different than those of Macs or Windows PCs. Some keys present on other laptops are missing, while new ones have been added. However, once you know the basic key combinations for taking screenshots, you’ll be good to go.

  • To take a screenshot of the entire screen, use the Ctrl + Show windows key combination. The Show windows key, which looks like a rectangle with two lines on the right side, is on the top row of the keyboard (it’s the equivalent of the F5 key on a PC keyboard).

  • To take a screenshot of a portion of the screen, press the Shift + Ctrl + Show windows keys. You’ll see a crosshair icon; click and drag it until the part of the screen you want to copy is highlighted, and then let go.

After you’ve taken the screenshot, you might see a copy of the screenshot in a pop-out window (depending on which version of Chrome OS you’re using). It will give you the option of copying the screenshot to your clipboard or annotating the image.

Any screenshot you take will end up in the Downloads folder. To find the folder:

  • Select the Launcher at the left corner of your display.

  • Look for the icon named “Files” under the search field. If you don’t see it, select the up arrow and look for the “Files” app there.

  • That icon will bring up your file manager. Look for your Downloads folder under the “My Files” category on the left. Your screenshots will be there.

Fix "Aw, Snap!" page crashes and other page loading errors

If you're getting the "Aw, Snap" error or another error code instead of a webpage, Chrome is having problems loading. You might also see the page loading slowly or not opening at all.

Reload the page

Usually, you can reload the page to fix the error.
At the top left, click Reload .

If that didn't work...

Step 1: Check your internet connection

  • Make sure your computer's connected to Wi-Fi or a wired network.

  • Try reloading the tab with the error.

Step 2: Clear your cache

Chrome might have information stored that's stopping the page from loading.

Open the page in an Incognito window

  1. On your computer, open Chrome.

  2. At the top right, click More   New Incognito window.

  3. In the Incognito window, try opening the page. If it opens, clear your cache and cookies.

  1. At the top right, click More   More tools  Clear browsing data.

  2. Next to "Time range," select All time.

  3. Select Cached images and files and Cookies and other site data. Deselect the other types of data.

  4. Click Clear data.

  5. Try reloading the tab with the error.

Step 3: Close other tabs, extensions, & apps

Your device may have run out of memory, and can't load the site while also running your apps, extensions, and programs.

  1. Free up memory:

    1. Close every tab except for the one that’s showing the error message.

    2. Quit other apps or programs that are running, and pause any app or file downloads.

    3. Uninstall unnecessary extensions from Chrome. At the top right, click More   More tools  Extensions. On extensions you don't use, click Remove.

  2. Try reloading the tab with the error.

Still not working?

Step 4: Restart your computer

Programs or apps sometimes stop a page from loading.

  1. Restart your computer.

  2. Try loading the page again.

Step 5: Update Chrome

  1. On your computer, open Chrome.

  2. At the top right, click More   Settings.

  3. On the left, click Menu   About Chrome.

  4. Chrome will check if there's an update available. You might have to wait a few seconds to see it.

    • If there's an update, you'll see an option to click Relaunch. After relaunching, try reloading the tab with the error.

    • If there are no instructions, your version of Chrome is up-to-date.

Step 6: Check for unwanted software

If you're on Windows, use the Chrome Cleanup Tool to find and remove unwanted software.

If you're on a Mac or Linux computer, see our suggestions for spotting and getting rid of unwanted software.

After removing unwanted software, try reloading the tab with the error.
