Our new high school mathematics standards expect students to practice applying mathematical measures of thinking to real-world issues and challenges while the standards prepare students to think and reason in a mathematical manner.

The high school standards represent a set of rigorous standards which define and develop college and career readiness by helping students develop a depth of understanding and the ability to apply mathematics to novel situations as we typically do as college students and as adults in our careers.

The standards emphasize mathematical modeling and the use of mathematics and statistics to analyze empirical situations. For example, the draft standards state: "Modeling links classroom mathematics and statistics to everyday life, work, and decision-making."
