SVHS Academy Opportunities
The Shades Valley High School campus offers students many opportunities for career academies through our Shades Valley Schools program. The nearby Shades Valley Technical Academies (SVTA) center, located at 5191 Pine Whispers Drive in Irondale, also offers students many career pathways through the Jefferson County Academies program.
Participating in a Shades Valley School
Shades Valley Schools are open to students attending Shades Valley High School. Interested students should discuss their options with their counselor.
Applying for a Jefferson County Academy
Students already attending a school with the Jefferson County Public School System and students outside the Jefferson County Public School System may apply for admission to the Jefferson County Academies.
In order to apply, please follow the following steps:
- Complete the Academy application. The application may be printed from the Jefferson County Academies page of this website or may be picked up at the Shades Valley High School office.
- Obtain all supplemental items necessary, such as transcripts, test scores, letters of recommendation, etc. See the application for full details.
- Submit the completed application to the Shades Valley High School office. Applications may be hand delivered or mailed.
- Some academies require an audition or submission of work samples. If you have questions about requirements, contact the academy director listed on the application.
Academy directors review applications and send letters of acceptance to the address provided on the application. The letter of acceptance will provide instructions for accepting your position in the academy.
Shades Valley Schools
The School of Arts and Media provides those students who are artistically gifted to explore their many talents through a variety of ways; instrumental, vocal, visual arts, dance, theater, and technical theater. Students receive first -hand experience from industry trained professionals in their field. The students graduate with the knowledge and skills necessary to continue to grow their skills into a profession.
The SV School of Automotive Technology offers students a study of processes and techniques characteristic of auto collision repair technology as well as knowledge and credentials for entry-level employment and/or to continue their education through college.
Shades Valley School of Business and Finance is located on the Shades Valley High School Main Campus. Our academy is now in its eighteenth year. This academy is a wonderful way for students to get a head start on college and career. Students will gain extensive knowledge in the fields of Finance and Accounting and will even get the chance to intern with a financial industry leader in the summer before their senior year or as a co-op experience during their senior year. All Jefferson County students are eligible to enroll in this fantastic program.
Shades Valley School of Health and Human Services provides career pathways for students in the health and human services industry. Students learn essential knowledge and skills designed to prepare them for careers in the industry. Students can begin their career track as early as the 9th grade.
Shades Valley School of STEM is developed to prepare students in the concepts of engineering, modeling, computer programming, and design. Students are taught using Project-Lead-The-Way (PLTW) pre-engineering curriculum. Courses are designed to develop a student’s problem solving, team building, and creative ability skills. Each course consists of advanced mathematics, computer science concepts, and technical writing.
Jefferson County Academies
JCABF introduces students to a broad range of career opportunities in the financial services industry equipping them to make sound choices for the future. JCABF is a member of the National Academy Foundation (NAF). NAF’s mission is to sustain a national network of career academies to support the development of America’s youth toward personal and professional success. NAF academies represent business/school partnerships that prepare students for future careers through a combination curricula and work-based experiences.
The Jefferson County Academy of Theater and Dance allows students the opportunity to study their craft in a professionally-oriented program intended for serious students. Multiple programs are presented each year utilizing student actors on stage. The program is designed to develop highly-trained theatre and dance students who intend to pursue related fields as their intended professions. This-award winning program has been selected repeatedly as one of the top ten high school productions in the United States.
The goal of the Pre-Engineering Academy at SVHS is to introduce high school students to the concepts of engineering modeling and design and to prepare them for success in engineering and other STEM fields at the undergraduate level The engineering academy courses are fastpaced and challenging requiring students to apply concepts in math, science, and technical writing We will be following the Project Lead The Way engineering curriculum which is designed to further develop problem solving skills, teach design techniques, nurture creative abilities, and foster teambuilding skills Our expectations are that each student understands and can develop a strategy for solving any number of design problems presented to them
The School of Visual Arts is dedicated to nurturing students interested in pursuing a career in the visual arts through an integrated, relevant curriculum tailored to their individual needs. This preparation ensures that our students will be successful in the workplace and ready to meet the competitive demands of the twenty-first century.
The Marine Corps Junior Reserve Officers' Training Corps program mission is to instill in students in United States secondary educational institutions the values of citizenship, service to the United States, personal responsibility and a sense of accomplishment.
