As your principal, I would like to wish all the stude= nts of=20 Pleasant Grove High School a successful school year. Success is not an accident but r= equires=20 dedication, hard work, and cooperation.&= nbsp;=20 This handbook is presented to develop a foundation upon which our s= tudent=20 body can build good citizenship, school spirit, and a good feeling of=20 self-respect. Remember, a s= chool is=20 only as good as its student body.

The policies and procedures contained in this handboo= k are=20 the results of a concerted effort on the part of the faculty, students,=20 administration, and the School Improvement Team (SIT). This information has been carefu= lly=20 prepared and presented so that it will be of value in helping you adjust t= o our=20 school and to become an integral part of it.

Parents are requested to help students understand the= =20 procedures and regulations of the school. =20 Parental help is also needed in assuring that the student understan= ds the=20 necessity for such regulations.

The ultimate purpose of education is to help each stu= dent=20 become contributing citizens in our society and to develop and accept the= =20 responsibilities and obligations of becoming a good citizen. Education and school will help p= repare=20 students to participate in varied activities and thus find those things wi= thin=20 our school which will prepare them to live a better life and finally take = their=20 place in this complex society. =20 Remember, your success in this school will be directly proportional= to=20 your efforts.

ACCIDENTS

Every accident in the school building, on the school = grounds,=20 at practice sessions, on the school bus or at any event sponsored by the s= chool=20 must be reported to the faculty member in charge or to the school office a= s soon=20 as possible.

ARRIVING AT SCHOOL

Students arriving at school before 7:50 a.m. must rep= ort=20 either to the lunchroom or the gymnasium by the main office and remain the= re=20 until the bell rings.

ATTENDANCE

Regular school attendance i= s=20 imperative to each child=92s educational progress. Accordingly, each student is exp= ected to=20 attend school every day school is in session. The Board recognizes that absenc= e from=20 school is sometimes necessary but absences from school will only be allowe= d for=20 good and justifiable reasons.

WRITTEN EXPLANATION FOR ALL ABSENCE= S=20 REQUIRED

Every stu= dent who=20 is absent from school must present to the school principal or his designee= a=20 written explanation for the absence.&nbs= p;=20 This written explanation = must=20 include

the student=92s first and last name= , date(s)=20 of absence(s), and a reason for the absence. A parent may request from the pr= incipal=20 permission for a student to be absent prior to the date of the= =20 absence. Any student who is= absent=20 and who did not receive permission before the absence, must submit a docto= r=20 excuse or a written explanation of the absence from the parent, guardian, = or=20 other person having control of the student to school officials upon the student=92s return to=20 school.

The princ= ipal will=20 have the opportunity to review the written permission request or the writt= en=20 explanation for the absence to determine whether the absence shall be excu= sed or=20 unexcused. The following ar= e=20 considered permissible reasons to have an absence excused:

(a) Student illness

(b) Inclement weather which makes it dangerous for students=20 to attend school

(d) Death in the immediate family

(e) Emergency condition as determined by the principal or=20 superintendent

(f) =20 Absence to observe traditional religious holidays = of a=20 local, national, or

intern= ational=20 origin when verified by the student=92s minister or religious

leader=

Any absen= ce not=20 falling into the categories listed above or otherwise excused by the princ= ipal=20 or the superintendent or his designee will be unexcused.

= ; =20 Written explanations f= rom=20 parent or guardian and/or doctor=92s excuses must be placed=

= ; =20 in the basket in the main office before first=20 block.

EXCESSIVE ABSENCES=20

Any stude= nt who=20 accumulates excessive absences in any course will not receive credit

for that = particular=20 course. In the alternating = block=20 schedule program, a student may not exceed six (6) absences per cla= ss per=20 year. If the maximum number= of=20 absences is exceeded, credit for that course may be allowed only if the=20 superintendent or his designee determines that the excessive absences were= due=20 to medical reasons as certified in writing by a licensed physician. Moreover, in such cases the=20 superintendent or his designee may require additional documentation relati= ng to=20 absences and may require the student to make arrangements for alternative= =20 educational instructions through a Board recognized program. All decisions of the superintend= ent=20 shall be final.

MAKE UP WORK<= /P>

A student= shall=20 have the opportunity to make up work which occurred during an excused abse= nce=20 under the following conditions. =20 Students will be given two days (starting on the

day he/sh= e returns=20 to school) for each day absent to complete missed work, provided a written= =20 excuse which is acceptable is presented.= =20 Any long term assignments will be due the day that the student retu= rns to=20 school. It shall be the responsibility o= f the=20 student or student=92s parents or guardian to arrange with each teacher to= make up=20 work. A teacher may req= uire the=20 student to make up work before/after school hours, in which case advance n= otice=20 will be given to allow the student to arrange for necessary transportation= .

= ; =20 TARDIES/EARLY=20 DEPARTURES

It is the= school=92s=20 objective to instill the characteristics of punctuality in our students. Consequently, tardies/early depa= rtures=20 will be treated as serious infractions.&= nbsp;=20 Tardies/early departures will be dealt with as discipline referrals= in=20 accordance to the Code of Conduct and this handbook. Three tardies/early departures w= ill=20 equal a Class I offense. Ea= ch=20 additional set of three tardies/early departures will move to the next=20 offense. Students are expec= ted to=20 be punctual in arriving to their classes and to school according to State = and=20 Jefferson County Policy.

= ; =20 CHECK-IN AND CHECK-OUT=20 PROCEDURES

Any stude= nt=20 checking in must have a note= from=20 their parent stating the reason for being late or a doctor=92s excuse. A c= heck-in=20 or check-out without a doctor=92s excuse counts as an unexcused absence fo= r any=20 class missed.

A student who checks out will not b= e=20 allowed to check-in without a doctor=92s excuse unless an administrator gr= ants=20 special prior permission.

BEHAVIOR CODE

The Pleasant Grove High Sch= ool=20 discipline code is based on the policies of the Jefferson County Board of= =20 Education.

Specifically, we feel that = no student=20 has the right to prevent another student through words or actions from hav= ing an=20 equal opportunity to an education.

If a student has been asked= to leave=20 from a school activity, their privilege of attending future events will be= =20 reviewed.

The types of punishments us= ed for=20 infraction of rules are, warnings and reprimands, isolation from class,=20 detention, local suspension, and board suspension.

Citizenship grades will be = awarded=20 according to the Code of Conduct.

= ; =20 For Class I offenses, U is=20 given after the second offense.&n= bsp;=20 (This includes tardies/early departures.)

= ; =20 For Class II and Class III offenses, U is given after the first=20 offense.

Conduct= grades=20 are not used in establishing A and B honor rolls.

CALENDAR FOR SCHOOL YEAR

The school calendar, as des= igned by=20 the Jefferson County Board of Education, is attached in the back of this=20 handbook so that it may be detached and become your permanent copy to keep= at=20 home. This calendar clearly= =20 explains the dates of attendance, holidays, grading periods and inclement= =20 weather days.

School will begin each day = at 8:00=20 A.M. sharp. Students will b= e=20 considered tardy after this time. = A=20 WARNING BELL will ring at 7:= 55 A.M.=20 to alert students to begin moving toward their first block classes.

All grades, 07-12, will rem= ain in=20 school until 3:00 P.M. each day. =20 Students will not be allowed to enter the school building or school= =20 property prior to 7:30 A.M. =20 Students arriving between 7:30 A.M. =96 7:40 A.M. are to report to = the=20 lunchroom or gymnasium until dismissed.

CARE OF BUILDING AND GROUNDS

Each pupil should have a de= ep feeling=20 of pride in taking care of our building and grounds. Be careful that no marks are mad= e on=20 furniture, walls, or equipment. Be=20 sure to clean shoes well before entering buildings. Paper on floors and grounds show= poor=20 citizenship and a lack of respect for your school. Help keep your school clean. Confine running and playing to=20 designated areas so as to preserve the lawn and shrubs. Walk on sidewalks and walkways=20 only. When restrooms are us= ed,=20 always be sure to flush either the urinals or toilets.

CELL PHONES

The cell phone policy for J= efCoEd has=20 changed. The board of education has left the policy up to the local school= =20 principal=92s discretion. At Pleasant Grove High School students will be a= llowed=20 to have cell phones in their possession but must be kept in the student=92= s locker=20 at all times during the school day. = ;=20 Students will not be allowed to use cell phones during the= =20 school day (8:00am-3:00pm). Any student caught using a cell ph= ones=20 (transmitting or receiving calls or data) will be issued a Class II Offens= e. The=20 only= =20 exception will be PRIOR approval by the administration. Any= =20 student caught having a phone =93in sight=94 will be issued a Class I Offe= nse and=20 could have the phone confiscated and a parent will to make arrangements fo= r the=20 phone to be picked up by the parent. No phone that has been confiscated= will=20 be returned to a student.

CHANGE OF ADDRESS

If you move out of our scho= ol zone=20 after you are required to notify the Student Services Department of the=20 Jefferson County Board of Education within 14 days to apply for a =93Chang= e of=20 Address=94. If this require= ment is=20 not met, the student will immediately be required to attend the new school= or=20 school system. Moves prior = to=20 September 5^th will require the student to attend the new school= or=20 system. THERE ARE NO EXCEPT= IONS AND=20 THIS DOES INCLUDE GRA= DUATING=20 SENIORS. (See also Moving o= r Change=20 of Residence.)

CHAPERONES

Chaperones are a necessity = for our=20 students to enjoy extra-curricular excursions. Chaperones, too, must meet certa= in=20 requirements for attending and chaperoning such trips. These requirements are:

(1) Chaperones must ride the bus with the students=92=20 class.

(2) Chaperones are not allowed to drive personal automobiles=20 to the destination.

(3) Only those persons selected by the teacher and approved=20 by the principal will be allowed to chaperone.

(4) Absolutely no young children, siblings, non-enrolled=20 students or past graduates may accompany a field trip.

CHECKS/NON-SUFFICIENT FUNDS

All checks that are made pa= yable to=20 Pleasant Grove High School must = have=20 the driver license number of the individual writing the check on it. The Jefferson County Worthless C= heck=20 Units will pursue collection of all our bad checks. Pleasant Grove High School will = have a=20 $29.00 service charge for an= y=20 non-sufficient funds check in addition to the amount of the bad check.

CIVIL RIGHTS

The Jefferson County Board = of=20 Education and Pleasant Grove High School does not discriminate in any way = on the=20 basis of race, sex, national origin or handicap. All Title IX complaints should b= e=20 referred to the Jefferson County Board of Education.

COURTESY ON CAMPUS AND IN CORRIDORS

Keep corridors (halls, pass= ageways)=20 open to traffic by walking to the right hand side of the hallway. Do no block traffic by standing = or=20 loitering in groups. Pass t= hrough=20 corridors quietly. Be consi= derate=20 of others in the corridors or classrooms. =20 Discard trash in the containers provided. Keep the school clean by picking= up=20 paper from the floors. Leav= e the=20 school building within five (5) minutes after the dismissal bell and the s= chool=20 campus within fifteen (15) minutes unless under the supervision of a staff= =20 member or teacher. Absolute= ly no=20 running in the corridors at any time.

DELIVERIES TO STUDENTS

It shall be the policy of P= leasant=20 Grove High School to reject the delivery of any products to students. This shall include food products= ,=20 pizzas, flowers, balloons, gifts, etc.&n= bsp;=20 The school will not accept this responsibility nor become a deliver= y=20 agent for community vendors.

DRESS AND GROOMING GUIDELINES

(1) Hats, caps, headbands, sweat bands, bandanas, visors,=20 and sunglasses must be removed and

placed= in the=20 locker or designated area and remain during the school day.

(2) Hair must be clean and well groomed, and should not=20 impair vision. Boys=92 hair= must=20 not

touch = the collar=20 of a T-shirt (rounded, crew-neck), when measured at full length (i.e., loo= se

or=20 unpinned). Male students wi= th=20 facial hair must keep it neat and well groomed. No

hairst= yle, hair=20 color, body piercing, clothing, or other article which is disruptive to th= e

learni= ng=20 environment or which identifies a student as being a member of a gang or a= ny

subver= sive or=20 unlawful organization will be allowed.

(3) Ear jewelry may be worn by females only. (Band-Aids may not be worn to co= nceal=20 an

earrin= g.) Nose jewelry is not to be worn b= y boys=20 or girls while they are in school. = =20 Jewelry

(studs= , pins,=20 etc.) may not be worn in any visible pierced areas of the body, including,= =20 but

not li= mited to,=20 the tongue.

(4) Students are to wear clothing in the manner for which it=20 is designed. No clothing sh= all=20 be

worn i= nside out;=20 suspenders/braces shall be fastened and belts buckled. Pants must be worn

at the= waist.=20 Students will not be allowed to carry blankets or wraps in school. Students are required to tuck in= shirts=20 at all times during the school day. If a shirt is not made to be tucked in= it=20 should not be worn. The only exception would be a sweater or sweatshirt, t= hese=20 may be worn provided an undershirt or camisole is worn and tucked in.

(5) Sun dresses or back less dresses/tops will be worn with=20 a jacket or an appropriate covering.

(6) Cut-off tops, tank tops, and mesh tops can be worn if a=20 t-shirt with sleeves is worn

undern= eath or=20 another shirt is worn over the top.

(7) Students must wear proper undergarments.

(8) Halter tops, tube tops, and midriff tops are not=20 allowed. Midriffs and sides= must be=20 covered.

(9) Bracelets, belts, and other clothing and accessories=20 with spikes, studs, or chains are not

allowe= d. NOTE: These may also be considered wea= pons and=20 appropriate disciplinary action may be taken. Excessive numbers of acceptable = items=20 are not allowed.

(10)=20 Insignias, buttons, and clothing which are suggest= ive of=20 wine, beer, whiskey, tobacco,

vulgar= ities and=20 violence, are drug-related, or are demeaning to other persons may not be

worn a= t school.=20

(11)=20 Jeans and other articles of clothing must be clean= with=20 no open holes above the knee. =20 No

shredd= ed jeans=20 will be allowed.

(12)=20 Sweat pants and jogging pants are allowed as long = as=20 they are properly fitted.

(13)=20 Articles of clothing must be appropriate for schoo= l=20 wear. Skirts, dresses, and = shorts=20 may

be no = shorter=20 than four inches above the top of the knee. Slits in skirts must meet the fo= ur=20 inches above the knee regulation.

(14)=20 Clothing shall not be so tight or so loose as to b= e=20 overly revealing, a disruption to the school

enviro= nment or a=20 safety concern.

(15)=20 Shoes appropriate to the school setting must be wo= rn at=20 all times. =20 House-shoes/bedroom slippers are not acceptable foot ware for= =20 school.

(16)=20 Book bags/back packs must be placed in the locker = or=20 designated area and remain there

=20 during the school day. Clear=20 bags or mess bags are the only book bags acceptable.

Any student who fails to dress=20 appropriately will not be allowed to attend class

until proper clothes can be secured= . If necessary, parents will be ca= lled to=20 bring

proper clothes to school. Until proper clothing can be sec= ured,=20 the student will

be isolated and will be responsible= for all=20 class work missed. Nonconfo= rmity=20 to

the dress code is a Class I=20 offense.

There may be some additional guidel= ine=20 directives from JefCoEd that were not available for this booklet at the ti= me of=20 printing.

ELIGIBILITY REGULATIONS FOR STUDENT=20 ACTIVITIES

Clubs, athletics and all ot= her school=20 sponsored activities are an integral part of the total school program, but= are=20 to be considered supplemental to the academic program. These regulations are designed t= o ensure=20 that minimum academic standards are achieved by students participating in= =20 extra-curricular activities.

An =93extra-curricular acti= vity=94 is=20 defined as a program of out-of-class pursuits occurring outside the 8:00 = =96 3:00=20 school day usually supervised and/or financed by the school, in which stud= ents=20 enjoy some degree of freedom in selection and participation. Extra-curricular activities are = not part=20 of the regular school curriculum. = =20 They take place during out-of-classroom time and often involve=20 performance before an audience or spectators. Extra-curricular activities shal= l=20 include but are not limited to, athletic and other teams, marching bands o= r=20 orchestras, cheerleaders, drill and flag teams, pep squads, student govern= ment,=20 musical performing groups, school publications, clubs, and dramatic groups= . Some re-evaluation of this listi= ng my=20 take place as a result of experience implementation.

ATTENDANCE

= ; =20 Attendance at extracurricular activities is a privilege and not a r= ight.=20 Students may be denied admission based on acceptable=20 behavior.

REQUIREMENTS

(A) =20 Students entering the 10^th, 11^{th,=20
and 12^th grades must have passed during the last two terms in=20
attendance and summer school, if applicable, at least six new Carnegie uni=
ts=20
with a minimum composite numerical average of 70 in those six units.}

(1) Four core curriculum courses must be included in those=20 units passed and averaged. =20 (English, mathematics, science, and social studies are core curricu= lum=20 courses.)

(2) Any student that accumulates more than four units of=20 core courses per year may earn less than the required four core courses du= ring=20 the next school year and be eligible as long as the student remains on tra= ck for=20 graduation with his/her class.

(B) =20 Students entering the 8^th and 9^{th<=
/SUP>=20
grades must have passed during the last two terms in attendance and summer=
=20
school, if applicable, at least five new subjects with a minimum composite=
=20
numerical average of 70 in those five subjects.}

NOTE: =20 A new unit is one that has not been previously passed. A term is half of a school year = as=20 defined by the local school system.

GUIDELINES

(1) Eligibility will be determined before the start of each=20 new school year. A student = that is=20 academically eligible at the beginning of the school year remains eligible= for=20 the remainder of that school year so far as grades are concerned.

(2) Students declared ineligible at the beginning of a=20 school year my regain their eligibility at the end of the first term by me= eting=20 the academic requirements listed above during their last two term in atten= dance=20 and summer school, if applicable. The restored eligibility of any s= tudent=20 must be determined no later than the fifth day of the second term.

(3) Only one unit (or subject) of physical education per=20 year may be counted.

(4) A maximum of two units (or subjects) earned in an=20 approved summer school may be counted.&n= bsp;=20 If a unit (or subject) is repeated in summer school, the higher num= erical=20 grade for that unit (or subject) may be used to compute the composite grad= e=20 average.

(5) An accredited correspondence course may be accepted by a=20 school system but must be completed before the school year starts.

(6) For eligibility purposes, no special recitation,=20 extra work, make-up work, tests, review, etc., may not be given for= the=20 purpose of making a student eligible.

(7) To be eligible, all students (including repeaters and=20 students held back) must be enrolled in a specified number of new units at= the=20 school they represent.

(a) 9^th , 10^th, and the=20 11^th graders must be carrying at least six new units (three per= term=20 on a 4x4 block schedule).

(b) 12^th graders that are on track for graduation=20 with more than the required number of units earned must be carrying at lea= st=20 four new units for the school year (two units per term on a 4x4 block=20 schedule).

(8) The eligibility of a student that has attended another=20 school during the preceding year must be established by a transcript from = that=20 school before the student is permitted to participate at the new school.

EMERGENCY WARNING

During any emergency situation = (whether=20 actual or drill) students will be held to even higher expectations of disc= ipline=20 standards.

EVACUATION DRILL: Short intermittent rings of = the bell=20 denotes a fire drill. Pupil= s shall=20 leave the building quickly and orderly according to the posted directions = in the=20 room. A special request is = made of=20 students to leave space outside for those who exit after them. When the building is emptied and= deemed=20 safe for occupancy, another bell will ring. Pupils are to return immediately= to the=20 interrupted class.

TORNADO DRILL: In the case of severe weathe= r, the=20 signal will be one long bell. =20 Students will go to the designated area as instructed by the teache= r and=20 remain until the all clear bell is sounded.

LOCK DOWN DRILLS: In the event of a lock down situation the princip= al or=20 designee will announce over the intercom a prearranged code. Classrooms and offices will rema= in=20 locked until further notice. No one=20 is allowed in the hallways until the all=20 clear is announced.

EXAM EXEMPTION GUIDELINES

GRADES 07 =96 08

Students in grades 07 =96 0= 8 will not=20 take semester exams. Instea= d,=20 students will take nine weeks assessments. Teacher teams will schedule test= s for=20 their students so that a student will take no more than two nine weeks=20 assessments in one day. Stu= dents=20 will attend other classes during the days when the assessments are given.<= /P>

GRADES 09 =96 12

Students in grades 09 =96 1= 2 will take=20 end of course exams. There = will be=20 no exemptions for stu= dents in=20 grades 09 =96 11. Seniors w= ith at=20 least a 90% average in a class may choose to exempt the exam. Semester exams count 20% of the= =20 grade. Seniors who decide t= o take=20 the College Board Advanced Placement Exam are exempt from the end of cours= e exam=20 in that course. The average= in a=20 class will be determined by the points accumulated during the term.

EXAM SCHEDULES

Exams will be scheduled dur= ing the=20 last week of the first term as determined by the principal. Exams for the second term will b= e=20 scheduled during the last week of school before graduation as determined b= y the=20 principal.

MAKE UP EXAMS =96 Make up end o= f course=20 exams and nine weeks tests are only allowed with a doctor=92s excuse and m= ust be=20 pre-arranged with the teacher.

FIELD TRIP REGULATIONS

Students representing their= school on=20 field trips or at athletic events are governed by the same dress and condu= ct=20 code which are appropriate for school.&n= bsp;=20 Any student not considered in proper attire will be subject to eith= er=20 changing their attire or be refused permission to travel with the group. All school rules apply while on = field=20 trips.

Gifted students are those w= ho perform=20 at high levels in academic or creative fields when compared to others of t= heir=20 age, experience, or environment. =20 These students require services not ordinarily provided by the regu= lar=20 school program. Students po= ssessing=20 these abilities can be found in all populations, across all economic strat= a, and=20 in all areas of human endeavor.

HOW DO WE IDENTIFY GIFTED S= TUDENTS IN=20 ALABAMA?

A student may be referred f= or=20 consideration for gifted services by teachers, counselors, administrators,= =20 parents or guardians, peers, self, or any other individuals with knowledge= of=20 the student=92s abilities. =20 Additionally, all second grade students will be observed as potenti= al=20 gifted referrals using a gifted behavior checklist.

For each student referred,= =20 information is gathered in the following three areas:

Aptitude =96 Aptitude shoul= d be=20 assessed through an individual or group test of intelligence or creativity= .

Characteristics =96 A behav= ior rating=20 scale designed to assess gifted behavior is completed by a classroom=20 teacher.

Performance =96 At least th= ree=20 indicators of performance at a gifted level must be submitted. These may include, but are not l= imited=20 to, achievement test scores, grades, products, work samples, and/or=20 portfolios.

The scores from the assessm= ents/items=20 used are entered on a matrix where points are assigned according to establ= ished=20 criteria. The total number = of=20 points earned determines if the student qualifies for gifted services.

GRIEVANCE PROCEDURES AND PROBLEM SOLVERS

The JEFCOED Problem Solver = is a=20 quick, easy, convenient way for problems to be resolved by letting the sys= tem=20 work for you. The Problem S= olver is=20 for everyone involved in the schooling process =96 students, teachers, pri= ncipals,=20 employees, parents, and community residents. Problem Solver forms may be obta= ined in=20 the school office and must be completed accurately and fully.

Before resorting to the Pro= blem=20 Solver method, it is required that direct contact be made with the buildin= g=20 principal to register the complaint or concern. See the JefCoEd Student Co= de of=20 Conduct for all the procedures that must be followed.

GUIDANCE AND COUNSELING

A child needs help in the p= rocess of=20 their growth and development; therefore, guidance services will begin with= the=20 child in the seventh grade. Each=20 class will be involved in guidance activities that will aid the following:=

HALL PASS

Students are not permitted = in the=20 halls or on the grounds during classroom time unless they are accompanied = by a=20 teacher or have a HALL PASS = from an=20 authorized staff member. Th= is rule=20 will be strictly enforced and a student in the hall or out of class withou= t a=20 pass may be subject to disciplinary action for skipping class.

It shall be the student=92s= =20 responsibility to request a pass and the teacher=92s responsibility to iss= ue a=20 pass before a student exits class.

HOMECOMING COURT SELECTION

NEW GUIDELINES FOR HOMECOMI= NG COURT=20 SELECTION:

Students in grades 9 =96 12= interested=20 in participating in the homecoming court as a candidate for Homecoming Que= en,=20 Maid, or King must meet the following criteria:

1. = =20 Overall grade point average of =93C=94 or better. Guidance Coun= selor=20 approval required.

2. = =20 Good citizenship, which includes good standing for= the=20 current school year and no Class II offenses. Administration=92s approval requ= ired.

3. = =20 Active involvement in an extra-curricular=20 activity. Club/Activity Spo= nsor=20 approval required.

Students must obtain a Home= coming=20 Candidate Form from the office. =20 Complete and return the form with approvals and a $10.00 entry fee = to=20 designee. All approved cand= idates=20 will be placed on respective grade level ballots and voted on by students = in=20 their grade.

HONOR CLASSES

Students at Pleasant Grove = High=20 School may indicate a desire to be in honors courses by signing up for the= =20 course at pre-registration. =20 Previous teachers of the student will then be asked to recommend or= not=20 recommend each student who has applied for the honors courses. The teacher will be asked to con= sider=20 the student=92s grades earned, attitude and motivation in class, SAT score= s,=20 and/or other JefCoEd criteria. &nbs= p;=20 Placement will be decided from this recommendation. This process will be followed ea= ch year=20 to allow the student to improve and possibly earn entrance into an honors = class=20 even when not in an honors class the previous year.

HONOR SOCIETY BY-LAWS

I. = &n= bsp;=20 Membership shall be based on scholarship, characte= r,=20 leadership, citizenship, and service.

II. = =20 Selection of all members shall be made on the basi= s of=20 faculty recommendation and the approval of a majority vote of the Honor So= ciety=20 Faculty Council.

To be el= igible=20 for membership:

(A) A=20 transfer candidate must have attended Pleasant Grove High School for a min= imum=20 of one semester.

(B) =20 Students who transfer from another school must hav= e=20 written documentation from that school (i.e. a letter from the sponsor) an= d=20 present that documentation to the sponsor at Pleasant Grove High School pr= ior to=20 the first scheduled meeting of the Pleasant Grove High School chapter of t= he=20 National or Junior Honor Society.

(C) A=20 candidate must have a minimum scholastic average of 3.75 for the National = Honor=20 Society and 3.75 for the Junior Honor Society.

(D) A=20 candidate should display qualities of good citizenship.

(E) A candidate should display qualities of leadership and=20 service.

III. = =20 Once selected, any member who falls below these=20 standards of excellence shall be warned and referred to the Facu= lty=20 Council:

(A) =20 If any member=92s grades fall below 3.75 for the N= ational=20 Honor Society and 3.75 for the =20 Junior Honor Society.

(B) =20 If any member is reported for cheating on an assig= nment=20 (documentation will be required from the teacher).

1. = =20 A member who receives a Class II offense is referr= ed to=20 the Faculty Council and is subject to dismissal.

2. = =20 A member who receives two Class I offenses is refe= rred=20 to the Faculty Council and is subject to dismissal even if those Class I=20 offenses are for tardies.

(D) =20 If any member is absent from a scheduled meeting.<= /P>

(E) If any member does not meet the required number of=20 service hours. (National Honor Society only)

All ma= tters=20 concerning membership shall be decided by a majority vote of the Faculty=20 Council. In the case of fla= grant=20 violation of school rules or civil laws a member does not necessarily have= to be=20 warned. If a member is dism= issed,=20 he or she shall never again be considered for membership.

IV. = =20 Membership in the National Honor Society and Junio= r=20 Honor Society is transferable from one school to another.

V. = =20 Membership dues shall be $10.00 each year.

VI. = =20 Regular scheduled meetings of the Pleasant Grove H= onor=20 Society are held on the first Thursday of the month (September-May). Call-meetings will be held as ne= eded for=20 various activities. Attenda= nce is=20 important. If a member has = an=20 unexcused absence from a meeting, he shall be warned. Students must be on time as indi= cated by=20 the individual sponsor and as further specified in bylaws of the particula= r=20 society. Inactive members a= re=20 subject to dismissal by the Faculty Council.

VII. = =20 Members shall regularly participate in chapter ser= vice=20 projects.

VIII. = =20 The Faculty Council reserves the right to rescind = the=20 invitation for membership.

All of the Pleasant Grove H= igh School=20 National Honor Society Bylaws are in compliance with The Constitution of t= he=20 National Honor Society.

The Honor Society tapings w= ill be in=20 the fall of each year beginning in 2002.

*The Faculty Council is mad= e up of=20 five faculty members appointed by the principal. Neither the principal nor the as= sistant=20 principal is eligible to serve on this council.

IDENTIFICATION BADGES

Every student enrolled at Pleasant Gr= ove High=20 School will be required to wear their student identification badges at all= times=20 during the school day. All students must use their ID badge in the lunchro= om for=20 payment and in the library to check out material. Students must wear the b= adges=20 around their neck and display them to their teachers upon entering each cl= ass.=20 The badges must be easily visible, facing the front (picture displayed) an= d may=20 not be tucked inside shirts, jackets or any other garment at any time duri= ng the=20 school day.

If a student fails to wear his/her=20 identification badge, the teacher will document the infraction on a classr= oom=20 management profile form and send it to the appropriate assistant principal= . The=20 same will be done each time thereafter during the term. The assistant prin= cipal=20 will give the student the appropriate punishment for violation of each=20 infraction. If the badge is lost or defaced, the student must immediately= =20 replace the ID badge. The replacement cost will be $5.00. Each day a lost = badge=20 is not replace will be considered a new violation.

INCLEMENT WEATHER

In the case of inclement we= ather,=20 please listen to local radio and television stations for school informatio= n for=20 the Jefferson County School District.&nb= sp;=20 If school must be dismissed due to bad weather, regular bus routes = will=20 be followed unless other information is given by the media. All practices, games, and=20 extracurricular activities are canceled if school is closed due to incleme= nt=20 weather.

INSURANCE FOR STUDENTS

Student insurance is availa= ble at a=20 normal cost and is optional. When a=20 student insured under this plan is injured, he/she will be given a claim f= orm=20 from the office. This form = must be=20 completed by his/her parents and presented to the doctor or hospital. The school merely acts as a medi= um in=20 supplying the insurance application forms and assumes no liability either = for=20 the injury or the subsequent negotiations with the company.

INTERNET ON DEMAND

What is Internet = On=20 Demand?

Int= ernet On=20 Demand (IOD) is a service that Pleasant Grove High School i= s=20 offering which allows the parent/guardian the access to check his or her c= hild=92s=20 grades, homework, attendance, tardies and other information at any time vi= a the=20 internet. If you choose to participate in the program, you will receive a= =20 statement that contains a Personal Identification Number (PIN) granting yo= u=20 access to your child=92s information. If you are interested in this servic= e be=20 inquire in the main office.

LIBRARY RULES

The library belongs to you.= It is established to contribute = to your=20 pleasure as well as your education. = ;=20 Students are expected to comply with the rules of the school while = in the=20 library. This includes bein= g quiet=20 and orderly. All books take= n out of=20 the library, for any purpose, must be checked out by the librarian. Any student caught with library = material=20 outside the library, which has not been checked out, may be subject to=20 suspension from the library or school.&n= bsp;=20 Reference books, magazines, and newspapers, are available for readi= ng in=20 the library, but cannot be checked out.

LUNCHROOM PRICES AND RULES

Your child will be assigned= a=20 five-digit school identification number which is also his/her lunchroom=20 number. Your child will have to know thi= s number=20 to access his/her cafeteria =93bank account=94. Students and parents must know this= account=20 number!! This account n= umber=20 will remain the same for grades 7 =96 12 as long as your child is enrolled= at=20 PGHS. The student=92s name,= account=20 number, and teacher=92s name must be on the checks. Place cash money in an envelope = with=20 your child=92s name, account number, teacher=92s name, and the amount of c= ash=20 contained in the envelope. = The=20 lunchroom CANNOT cash= checks=20 or give change back from checks. <= /SPAN>The full amount written on the chec= k will=20 go into the student=92s account.&nbs= p;=20 Please remember that the lunchroom is a separate department from th= e=20 school office account. DO NOT combine lunch money with = any=20 other payment to the school.&nbs= p;=20 It is best to pay in advance (ON MONDAYS). Lunches may be paid for daily, w= eekly,=20 monthly, or you can pay for up to 176 days in advance, and you will not ha= ve to=20 worry about lost lunch money or your child spending lunch money on somethi= ng=20 other than lunch. This also= enables=20 the student to go through the lunch line faster. Application forms for free and redu= ced=20 breakfast and lunch are available in the school office.

It is against t= he rules of common courtesy for a p= erson to=20 crowd ahead of others in the lunch line or to ask someone in the line to g= et=20 his/her lunch for them. Use= d and=20 dirty dishes must be returned to the designated window for disposal. All eating at the school must be= done in=20 the lunchroom or as designated by the teacher or principal. Because some students are allerg= ic to=20 dairy products, the lunchroom serves alternate juices. NO LUNCH CHARGES =96 SEE JEFFERS= ON COUNTY=20 POLICY #762. Money = must be=20 paid in advance. Children w= ithout=20 money will not receive a hot lunch.

CHILD NUTRITION CHARGED MEAL=20 POLICY

It is the intent of the Jef= ferson=20 County Board of Education to provide an opportunity for each child to eat = a=20 nutritious breakfast and lunch during the school day. It is also the policy of the Jef= ferson=20 County Board of Education to comply with all federal program regulations=20 pertaining to the National School Breakfast and National School Lunch=20 programs. Program regulatio= ns do=20 not allow for meal charges; therefore, it is the responsibility of = the=20 parent or guardian to pay for the meals a child purchases in advance or on= a=20 daily basis.

Each local school principal= and child=20 nutrition program manager will develop a written contingency plan to provi= de=20 meals to a student in the event of an emergency. The local school principal will = be=20 responsible for eliminating any outstanding indebtedness of students by th= e end=20 of each school year.

MEDICATION

The parent/guardian must si= gn a=20 consent form at the beginning of the school year that authorizes school personnel= to=20 administer the medication during school hours, before any medication is given a= t=20 school. If the medication o= rder is=20 changed during the school year, a new signed consent form is required.

For prescription medication= s, a=20 pharmacy-labeled container is required which includes the student=92s name= ,=20 doctor=92s name, name of medication, strength, dosage, time interval, and = date of=20 drug=92s discontinuation when appropriate. Whe= n the=20 medication to be given is a non-prescription medication, an original conta= iner=20 of the drug identifying the medication and all manufacturer=92s labeling p= lus the=20 student=92s name (written on the container) should be supplied by the=20 parent/guardian. The above= =20 guidelines are from the Alabama State Department of Education.

All medication (over the co= unter and=20 prescribed) must be placed in the office at the beginning of the school=20 day. Failure to do so could= result=20 in a Class III offense.

If a doctor requires that a= =20 medication must be with the student at all times, the doctor must submit a= =20 written note to the principal for approval of this action.

MOVING OR CHANGE OF RESIDENCE

Any student who moves or an= ticipates=20 moving should immediately notify the main office of the move and submit hi= s/her=20 new address. If the student= will be=20 going to another school, then he/she should see his/her counselor to begin= =20 withdrawal procedures. All = books=20 must be turned in to the office on the last day of attendance. No school records will be forwar= ded=20 until all financial obligations to the school have been paid. These debts may include money ow= ed for=20 lost or destroyed textbooks, library fines or lost library books, locker=20 charges, fund raising events, etc. = =20 (See also Change of Address.)

PARENT-TEACHER ASSOCIATION

Students should urge their = parents to=20 become active members of the Parent-Teacher Association. This organization is for the imp= rovement=20 of the school and thereby, for the good of the students. One hundred percent participatio= n is=20 desired. Membership dues wi= ll be=20 announced by the PTA.

PARENT=92S RESPONSIBILITY

The parent is the first and= most=20 influential teacher in the life of a child. Each parent must be involved in= =20 educating his/her child. Th= e=20 following suggestions are minimum responsibilities of the parent.

(1) Parents should ensure that there is a good learning=20 climate or environment in the home and ensure that adequate space is=20 provided.

(2) Parents should encourage and assist in the development=20 of good study habits.

(3) Parents should encourage children to achieve and perform=20 at their ability level.

(4) Parents should develop, in cooperation with the school=20 administration, the child=92s academic schedule using all available test=20 information and other data which indicate the aptitude and abilities of th= e=20 child. This pertains specif= ically=20 to the Exceptional Education Program.&nb= sp;=20 It may also involve physical education for students who are handica= pped=20 or physically unable to participate.

PARKING PROCEDURES FOR STUDENTS

Driving any type of vehicle= onto the=20 campus of Pleasant Grove High School is a privilege and not a right. That= =20 privilege may be suspended/revoked by the administration. Students driving= any=20 type of motor vehicle to school must have a valid Alabama driver=92s licen= se and=20 proof of insurance. In the = interest=20 of safety and to prevent abusive use of motor vehicles, obey these rules:<= /P>

(1) =20 BE ON TIME---Students who are tardy to= school=20 6 times will have driving privileges suspended for five school=20 days.

=B7 = =20 9=20 tardies =96 10 school days suspension of driving=20 privileges

=B7 = =20 12=20 tardies =96 15 school days suspension of driving=20 privileges

=B7 = =20 15=20 tardies =96 driving privileges will be revoked for remainder of school=20 year

(2) Drive safely at all times.

(3) Speed limit is 15 M.P.H.

(4) Obey all traffic laws.

(5= ) Park only in your designated parking space. (If someone has parked in your park= ing=20 space you will need to park in the Bethel Church parking lot. Then you need to report this to = the=20 assistant principal.)

(6) Do not use or visit any vehicle during the school day=20 without written permission from the principal or his designee.

(7) The principal may request a student=92s car to be moved at=20 any time.

(8) Parking tags are required on all vehicles driven by=20 students.

(9) A rental tag for parking is non-transferable.

(10)=20 All students attending Minor High School will ride= a=20 school bus provided by the Board of Education.

(11)=20 Students will be allowed to park in the Bethel Chu= rch=20 parking lot with a school permit. = =20 These spaces are unreserved and students must park in a white outli= ned=20 space. This area will be un= der=20 school jurisdiction and all rules and regulations will apply.

Violation of any of these r= egulations=20 may result in a disciplinary action and may be just cause to deny the stud= ent=20 from bringing his/her vehicle on campus.

PERSONAL PROPERTY

Items such as cell phones, = electronic=20 games, cameras, tape/CD players, trading cards, yo-yos, or any other such = item=20 should not be brought to school unless specifically requested by a= =20 teacher. These items may be= taken=20 up and sent to the Assistant Principal=92s office. THE SCHOOL WILL NOT BE RESPONSIB= LE FOR=20 THESE ITEMS. The admini= stration=20 may refuse involvement if any of these items are brought to school and los= t,=20 stolen or damaged.

POSTERS

Signs and posters that a st= udent=20 wishes to display must first be approved by the administration. Posters displayed without author= ization=20 will be removed. Any studen= t who=20 posts printed material without prior approval shall be subject to discipli= nary=20 action.

PROGRESS REPORTS

Progress reports are sent t= o parents=20 at regularly scheduled intervals to inform them of their student=92s acade= mic and=20 physical progress. Lost pro= gress=20 reports will not be replaced. =20 Grades and/or information pertaining to lost progress reports may b= e=20 obtained from the counselors=92 office.&= nbsp;=20 It shall be the responsibility of the parent to review the progress= =20 report each nine weeks. Int= erim=20 progress reports will be used as necessary to report deficiencies to=20 parents.

PROMOTION GUIDELINES

GRADES 07 =96 08

In order for a student to b= e promoted=20 from 7^th grade to 8^th grade and from 8^th = grade=20 to 9^th grade, all of the following promotional criteria must be= =20 met:

(1) Students must earn passing grades in six academic=20 subjects in a school year. = Four of=20 these subjects must be English, math, science, and social studies.

(2) Students must comply with JEFCOED Attendance Policy.

(3) A maximum of two failed subjects may be taken in summer=20 school. This would mean a d= ouble=20 block of summer school =96 day and night for six weeks each.

GRADES 09 =96 12

Units for graduation are ea= rned on a=20 term basis. Unit credit wil= l not be=20 given in a subject until the course is passed with a minimum grade of 60.<= SPAN=20 style=3D"mso-spacerun: yes"> Beginning with students entering= the=20 9^th grade in the fall of 1998 the following promotional criteri= a must=20 be met:

(1) From 09^th to 10^th grade =96 6 units=20 must be earned.

(2) From 10^th to 11^th grade =96 14 units=20 must be earned.

(3) From 11^th to 12^th grade =96 20 units=20 must be earned.

(4) From 12^th to graduation =96 28 units must be=20 earned and students must al= so pass=20 the Alabama High School Basic Skills Exit Exam to receive a diploma.

RIDES

The arrival and departure time for al= l=20 JefCoEd schools is 7:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. =93No Student is to enter upon = school=20 property more than 30 minutes prior to the official school day or to remai= n on=20 school property more than 30 minutes after the close of the official schoo= l day=20 unless expressly authorized by the school principal, presently enrolled in= an on=20 site school child care program, participating in an authorized extracurric= ular=20 school activity or program, or transported to school by bus.=94 (JCBE Poli= cy=20 343.1)

Parents should make arrangements for = pick up=20 of all students according to this policy. Siblings of students participati= ng in=20 extracurricular activities will not be allowed to remain on campus=20 unsupervised.

AT THE END OF ALL SCHOOL SPONSORED = EVENTS,=20 IT IS IMPERATIVE THAT PARENTS/GUARDIANS BE ON TIME TO PICK UP THEIR CHILD.= ATHLETIC CONTESTS ARE APPROXIMAT= ELY 1 =BD=20 HOURS IN LENGTH. IT IS THE = PARENTS=20 RESPONSIBILITY TO PICK THE STUDENT UP ON TIME; FAILURE TO DO SO MAY RESULT= IN=20 THE STUDENT BEING PROHIBITED FROM SCHOOL SPONSORED ACTIVITIES IN THE=20 FUTURE.

SCHOOL BUS PROCEDURES

Any student who rides a Jef= ferson=20 County Board of Education School bus must sign, along with their=20 parents/guardians, a =93Bus Riders Contract=94 and abide by all the terms = found=20 with-in. A student being=20 transported in County owned vehicles is required to comply with the studen= t Code=20 of Conduct. Any student who= fails=20 to comply with the rules of conduct while on school transportation may be = denied=20 transportation services and shall be subject to disciplinary action. The following rules (as well as = others)=20 apply to student conduct on school transportation:

1. = =20 Students shall follow the driver=92s directions at all times.

2. = =20 Students shall board and leave the bus in an order= ly=20 manner at their designated bus stop.

3. = =20 Students do not change seats or stand while the bu= s is=20 in motion. Seat belts must = remain=20 buckled on buses equipped with belts.

4. = =20 Students shall not cut, scratch, write on, or othe= rwise=20 deface any part of the bus. =20 Restitution may be required.

5. = =20 Students shall not extend head, hands, arms, or le= gs out=20 the windows nor hold any object out of the windows or throw objects within= or=20 out of the bus.

6. = =20 Usual classroom conduct shall be observed on the=20 bus. Unruly conduct, includ= ing the=20 use of obscene language, will result in disciplinary action being taken.

If the = need for a=20 student=92s suspension from the bus arises every effort will be made to no= tify the=20 parent prior to the time the suspension takes effect.

SEARCH AND SEIZURE POLICIES

To maintain order and disci= pline in=20 the schools and to protect the safety and welfare of students and school=20 personnel, school authorities may search a student, student lockers, stude= nt=20 automobiles, and/or any object brought onto campus and may seize any illeg= al,=20 unauthorized, or contraband materials discovered in the search.

PERSONAL SEARCHES

A student=92s person and/or= personal=20 effects (i.e. purse, book bag, etc.) may be searched whenever a school aut= hority=20 has reasonable suspicion to believe that the student is in possession of=20 illegal, unauthorized, or contraband materials. If a pat down search of a studen= t=92s=20 person is conducted, it shall be conducted in private by a school official= of=20 the same sex. Another adult= witness=20 shall also be present. If t= he=20 school official has reasonable suspicion to believe that the student has o= n=20 his/her person an item eminently dangerous to the student or to others, a = more=20 intrusive search of the student=92s person may be conducted. Such a search may only be conduc= ted in=20 private by a school official of the same sex, with an adult witness of the= same=20 sex present, and only upon prior approval of the Superintendent or his/her= =20 designee, unless the health or safety of students will be endangered by th= e=20 delay which might be caused by following these procedures.

LOCKER SEARCHES

Student lockers are school = property=20 and remain at all times under the control of the school; however, students= are=20 expected to assume full responsibility for the security of their lockers.<= SPAN=20 style=3D"mso-spacerun: yes"> Periodic general inspections of = lockers=20 may be conducted by school authorities for any reason at any time without= =20 notice, without consent, and without a search warrant.

AUTOMOBILE SEARCHES<= /P>

Students are permitted to p= ark on=20 school premises as a matter of privilege, not of right. The school retains authority to = conduct=20 routine patrols of student parking lots and inspection of the exteriors of= =20 student automobiles on school property.&= nbsp;=20 The interiors of student vehicles may be inspected whenever a schoo= l=20 authority has reasonable suspicion to believe that illegal, unauthorized a= nd/or=20 contraband materials are contained inside.

SELLING OF ITEMS AT SCHOOL

Students will not be allowe= d to sell=20 any items at school other than school sponsored fund raisers during approp= riate=20 times. Any items being sold= and=20 money made will be taken up and disciplinary action may be taken against t= he=20 offending student.

SUBSTITUTE TEACHERS

Our school is fortunate in = having=20 capable people to help us whenever our regular teachers are ill or attendi= ng=20 required conferences and so forth. = =20 A substitute teacher is an important visitor whose impressions of o= ur=20 school will be carried into the community. Substitute teachers have the sam= e=20 authority as regular teachers and will follow our prescribed discipline=20 plan.

TEACHER CONFERENCES

If a parent/guardian wishes= a=20 conference with a teacher, they may do so by calling the school and reques= ting a=20 phone conference, or a pre-arranged conference. The conference will be scheduled= and=20 held either in the teacher=92s room or in the counselor=92s office.

TELEPHONE

The telephone in the main o= ffice,=20 library, and counselors=92 office is for the purpose of transacting necess= ary=20 school business and not for the convenience of students. If students are sick and need to= call a=20 parent, or if there is an emergency, they may do so in the main office. Phone calls made by students wil= l cost=20 $.25 per call, unless the student is sick and needs to call a parent. Students should remember that it= is=20 their responsibility to bring the necessary school supplies, books, homewo= rk=20 assignments, athletic equipment, or lunch money to school, not their paren= ts=92=20 responsibility. Only in the= case of=20 an emergency, sickness, or equally urgent cause will any student be paged = to the=20 telephone. Infrequent messa= ges may=20 be left in the office for transmittal to a pupil at some convenient time d= uring=20 the day. We will not call s= tudents=20 to the phone or give messages from students outside the school, only messa= ges=20 from parents/guardians will be accepted. The administration/staff reserves= the=20 right to screen-monitor phones call made on Pleasant Grove High School pho= nes.=20 (See Cell Phones)

TOBACCO FREE ENVIRONMENT

Jefferson County Board of E= ducation=20 has declared all building operated by the Board, and all spaces within the= m, to=20 be officially designated smoke-free environments. It is further intended that smok= ing and=20 other tobacco use be prohibited on campus grounds during the normal work d= ay and=20 on buses at all times. This= policy=20 shall apply to each employee, student, and visitor.

VIDEO SURVEILLANCE

Pleasant Grove High School = employs=20 the use of video camera surveillance to help maintain a safe and order cam= pus=20 conducive to learning. Any person or vehicle is subject to such.

VISITATION =96 PARENTAL AND GUEST

A parent or guest visiting = the school=20 must check in at the office to secure proper clearance. Conferences with the principal, = teacher,=20 or other staff members, should be arranged in advance by phoning the schoo= l=20 office. Teacher conferences= will=20 not be scheduled during hours when the teacher has an assignment. Absolutely no visitors, includin= g=20 parents and/or guests, are to be in the building without permission from t= he=20 principal or his designee. = This=20 seemingly strict procedure is to protect all students in our care and=20 charge.
