SOCIAL STUDIES
Four credits in Social Studies must be earned for graduation including ninth, tenth, eleventh grade history and twelfth grade American Government/Economics.
Ninth grade World History & Geography Since 1950 - This course is a survey of world history from 1500 to the present. Major governments and events covered include: the Renaissance, the Reformation, exploration of the New World, revolutions from 1650 to 1815, imperialism World War I, world wide depression, rise of dictators, World War II, the Cold War, the fall of the Soviet Union, and the quest for human rights around the world.
Honors/Pre AP Ninth Grade World History & Geography - This course is the honors curriculum which includes the survey of the general course with the addition of an emphasis on the development of writing skills, critical thinking, presentation, and independent research.
Tenth Grade U.S. History & Geography Beginning to 1900 - This course begins with pre-discovery and continues to the 1900's. Topics covered include the discovery and exploration of the Americas by Europe, the creation of the New Nation, expansion and reform, the Civil War, Reconstruction, Industrialization, and expansion.
Honors/Pre AP Tenth Grade U.S. History and Geography Beginning to 1900 - This course is the honors curriculum which includes the survey of the general course with the addition of an emphasis on the development of writing skills, critical thinking, and research skills.
Eleventh Grade U.S. History & Geography 1900 to Present - This course is the continuation of the study of history begun in the tenth grade. Materials covered includes expansion and imperialism, World War I, the Great Depression, World Wart II, the Cold War, the Civil Rights Movement, the Vietnam War, “Reaganomics”, and the United States role in world affairs in the 1970's, 80's, and 90's.
Advanced Placement Eleventh Grade U.S. History & Geography 1900 to Present - This course is the honors curriculum which includes the survey of the general course with the addition of an emphasis on the development of writing skills, critical thinking, and research skills.
Twelfth Grade American Government & Economics - This two-part course provides students with a detailed understanding of the organization and function of government at all levels in the nation. It further provides students with detailed knowledge in the workings of modern-day economics, in particular the American capitalist system. Students acquire information important to the study of government and the basic economic concepts in the interpretation of graphic economic data.
Advance Placement American Government- (This course is linked with Economics/Current Events and must be taken together for two credits.)This course is the national college level curriculum established by the College Board which includes understanding and function of government at all levels. This course places special emphasis on writing, critical thinking, and research skill.
Psychology - This course is an introduction to the scientific study of behavior and mental processes. This course studies the brain, learning, personality, mental illness, and other topics. This course is an elective available for eleventh and twelfth grade students.
