Bottenfield Middle School is one of the “Fabulous Fourteen” ARI-PAL schools in Alabama. We are committed to using best practices and strategic teaching to ensure student success. We embrace professional learning communities where our focus is on learning, not just teaching. We believe that literacy is the core of all subjects and provides students with the necessary framework for exemplary student achievement.
What is the Alabama Reading Initiative (ARI)?

· Anchored by reading research
· Aimed at ultimately achieving grade-level reading for all of the Alabama’s public school student
What is Strategic Teaching?
Strategic teaching is the process of incorporating purposeful planning, multiple strategies, and explicit instruction to maximize the understanding and retention of content material. Strategic teaching incorporates literacy strategies throughout content lessons that ensure student engagement essential to learning.
Goals for ARI-PAL
· To build highly successful adolescent literacy demonstration sites.
· To expand ARI into more secondary schools.
· To increase the effectiveness of the ARI secondary model by making it compatible with the latest research.
