News from the Health Room...

Welcome to another school year. I am your area nurse, Amanda McCrary. I am also happy to have Sheila Posey here as our Health Room Aide.

Listed below are some important guidelines regarding the administration of medications at school as well as rules for vomiting or fever. Please refer to these guidelines for directions when your child will need to have medications administered at school or is sick.

1.  If your child has prescription medication that needs to be taken at school, your physician must complete an authorization (available at the school) before any prescription medication can be administered to your child.

2.  Any medication that is administered at school must be in the original container. Please do not place any medicines in Ziploc bags, envelopes, saran wrap, etc... It cannot be identified and cannot be given.

3.  Children are not permitted to transport medications from home to school. Parents/Guardians/Responsible Adult must be responsible for bringing all medications to the school. This includes cough drops, inhalers, over the counter medicines, etc...

4.  We can no longer accept parent authorization to give over the counter medications such as Tylenol, Motrin, Benadryl, etc...for the entire school year. In extreme cases, the physician may authorize the use of over the counter medications to be given as needed. Parents must give specific instructions as to why such medicines are needed. The medication will be administered only for the reason indicated. These parental authorizations will expire after two weeks and the parent should pick up the medication as soon as possible.

5.  A child who has vomited before school does not need to come to school. If the child vomits at school, the child must be sent home and not return until he/she has not vomited for 24 hours.

6.  If a child has a fever of 100.4 or more, he/she does not need to come to school, even if you give them Tylenol. The child will be sent home if he/she has a temperature of 100.4 or greater while at school. The child does not need to return to school until fever free for 24 hours.
