| AMSTI stands for Alabama Math,
Science, and Technology Initiative and is a state program that focuses and
trains teachers on how to engage and integrate hands on, research based
activities into math and science. Following a 2 week training this summer,
teachers have first hand knowledge of how to locate and integrate activities
into curriculum. They will also be using prepared science kits for certain
themes in science. "Investigations" is a math program that will allow
students the same hands on, engaging activities in math. This is done
through the use of manipulatives and problem solving questions. Bryan was a host school for AMSTI. Five school districts, which included over 300 teachers were trained this summer. The event was kicked off with a visit from Governor Bob Riley. According to www.amsti.org, "The AMSTI schools showed consistently and often statistically significant gains over non-AMSTI schools in all areas tested by the Stanford 10 and by the Alabama Reading and Mathematics Test (ARMT), in both elementary and middle school grades."
