Brief History of School: Jefferson County was donated 20 acres of land by Blach’s Department store in 1957. Jefferson County then purchased another 40 acres of land to total 60 acres for the school site. The school opened in September 1958 and was named Erwin after Mr. E.B. Erwin, a former Superintendent of Education. The faculty consisted of sixteen teachers and one principal. The school had four classroom buildings (A, B, C, and D) and the administration and lunchroom building. Erwin was, at that time, first through ninth grade. Since then, four more classroom buildings have been built, (E, F, G, and H). The PTA was organized in September 1958 under the leadership of Mrs. James Butler. This school was a dream of Mr. Paul Snow and was built due to his efforts. Mr. Snow did not live long enough to see the school as a reality, he died in June 1957. His wife taught at Erwin for sixteen years. Since 1965, there have been more students on the grounds of Erwin than any other school in the county.
