Jefferson County Schools Virtual School Policy

Scope and Delivery of Services  

The Board provides a virtual school option for grades 9 -12 that includes, at a minimum, all courses that are needed to obtain a high school diploma. Exceptions must be approved by the Virtual Schools Review Team based on documented need.

Such courses will be delivered through a district-approved Learning Management System.

Full time virtual school students must enroll in 6 courses at a minimum per academic school year in order to fulfill the requirements for graduation.

Student Eligibility Criteria

Students who meet the following requirements are eligible to participate in the virtual education program:

  • Reside in the Jefferson County Schools attendance zone
  • Enrolled in a Jefferson County School
  • Compliance with the district’s Student Acceptable Use Agreement
  • Have access to the internet and to a computer/device outside of school
  • Maintain a minimum GPA of 2.0 in all courses taken during the most current academic year
  • Maintain appropriate course progression as measured by pacing and grades
  • Students and parents participate in a district-defined virtual education orientation
  • Meet school system enrollment requirements for the course in question including, but not limited to, successful completion of any prerequisite courses
  • Provide own transportation to base school for unit assessments, end of course assessments, and any district and state mandated assessments
  • Sign and agree to abide by the Academic Integrity Contract
  • Adheres to the Code of Student Conduct
  • Participation may be denied if the Virtual School Review Team determines that participation would be detrimental to the student’s academic progress


Monitoring Performance and Testing Requirements

Individual student performance will be monitored pursuant to the school system’s traditional academic credit requirements and grade scale.  Students utilizing the virtual school option will be subject to all state testing and accountability requirements and will be subject to the same rules and regulations regarding the administration of such tests applicable to traditional public school students enrolled in the traditional public school.

The Superintendent is hereby authorized to take whatever action may be necessary to facilitate the state testing and accountability requirements applicable to virtual school students.  The school system reserves the right to require students utilizing the virtual school option to participate in state testing and accountability requirements on campus at a date and time selected by the school system.

The Superintendent is also authorized to take whatever action may be necessary to facilitate the integrity of course assessments.  The school system reserves the right to require students participating in virtual school to complete specified assessment activities on campus at a date and time selected by the school system.

Attendance

Students participating in the virtual school option will be considered as being in attendance if the students are successfully progressing in the virtual class coursework. Success will be measured by pacing and grades.

The school system reserves the right to set specific attendance requirements for individual students as indicated by successful course progression. The superintendent or his designee is authorized to develop alternate attendance policies for students who are more than 20% behind the target course completion, has a grade below 65, and/or has shown no significant activity in the course for one week. A student not progressing appropriately will be required to attend the base school during regular school hours until he or she demonstrates that they are within 3% of target course completion and/or is maintaining a grade of 70 or above. A student’s failure to comply with such requirements may result in administrative action including, but not limited to, probation or removal from the class or a charge of truancy, if appropriate.

      

Removal

Students may be transitioned back to a traditional school day program if:

  1. the student’s participation in the virtual program is impeding the student’s academic progress;
  2. the student fails to progress through the course successfully as indicated by pacing and grades;
  3. the student violates school system policies, procedures, rules or regulations, including, but not limited to, the school system’s rules governing the Acceptable Use Policy or the Academic Integrity Contract.

           

Extracurricular Activities

Students must meet the same extracurricular activity eligibility requirements as students enrolled in the traditional day program, including, but not limited to, any applicable Alabama High School Athletic Association (“AHSAA”) requirements. Student residency for purposes of participating in extracurricular activities will be determined in accordance with applicable state law and AHSAA guidelines.

           

Additional Procedures Authorized

The Superintendent or his designee, along with the Virtual School Review Team, is authorized to develop such procedures as he or she deems necessary to implement this policy including, but not limited to, eligibility criteria for courses, methods for informing students and parents of the virtual program’s requirements and rules, and a process for making determinations regarding a student’s continued eligibility.
