This is a brief summary of benefits provided to regular employees of the Jefferson County Schools and is provided as a service to employees and applicants. It is not a Summary Plan Description as that document is defined under the Employee Retirement Income Security Act (ERISA). In case of a conflict between this summary and the provisions of the Plan or Plans discussed herein, the provisions of the plan shall govern.  TIME OFF -

Holidays: Scheduled holidays are indicated on the School Calendar.

Personal Days: Employees are entitled to five (5) personal days per year, three of which are at the cost of a substitute. Personal days should be scheduled in advance with your supervisor and require that provisions be made to "cover" your assignment in accordance with the requirements of your school/department.

Sick Days: Employees earn sick days at a rate of one (1) day per month worked, i.e. 9 month employees - 9 days per year, 10 month employees - 10 days per year, 12 month employees - 12 days per year. Sick days are accumulated and transferable between Alabama school systems, and may count as service for the purpose of computing retirement benefits.

Vacation: (Applicable to twelve (12) month employees only)

Employees with up to15 years of employment earn 10 days per year, at the rate of 5/6 day per month.

Employees with over 15 years service earn 15 days per year, at the rate of 1.25 days per month.

RETIREMENT-

All full time employees must participate in the retirement plan administered by the Retirement System of Alabama. Your monthly payroll will be deducted 5% of gross compensation for this contribution. Employees are vested in the Retirement System after ten (10) years of service.

 DEFERRED COMPENSATION-

Employees may participate in a deferred compensation or an annuity plan, which allows the tax sheltering of a portion of their compensation.

INSURANCE-

Both single and family coverage is available with a choice of traditional indemnity insurance through Blue Cross / Blue Shield of Alabama or two (2) Health Maintenance Organizations (HMO) - Health Springs of Alabama and Viva. Effective October 1, 2004, the cost of coverage is $2.00/month for individual or $134.00/month for family coverage. Employees who have spouses who are also eligible for PEEHIP as a school system employee in Alabama may combine allocations to eliminate any out-of-pocket premium cost for insurance.
