The Constitution of the United States of America

In commemoration of the 217th anniversary of the signing of the Constitution, September 17th was designated as Constitution Day. This special event reminded us of the day in 1787 when the Founding Fathers signed one of America’s most important documents. Bagley Jr. High students reenacted the Constitutional Convention as they signed the Constitution.

The United States Constitution is the oldest written national constitution still in operation. This document defines the structure of our Federal government and delineates the rights of the states within the union, and individual citizens within the nation. Investigate the words up close and go on a tour of the United States Constitution.

The Constitution opens with the Preamble, which reads:

We the People of the United States, in Order to form a more perfect Union, establish Justice, insure domestic Tranquility, provide for the common defense, promote the general Welfare, and secure the Blessings of Liberty to ourselves and our Posterity, do ordain and establish this Constitution for the United States of America.
