CHILD NUTRITION PROGRAMS PHILOSOPHY

Because the Board recognizes that optimal learning can more nearly occur when students are healthy and well fed, Child Nutrition Programs shall make an adequate nutrition program available to all students.

Child Nutrition Programs shall have as its primary goal to assist each school in the planning, preparation and serving of a nutritious and balanced diet which shall provide at least one-third of the United States Department of Agriculture's recommended daily allowances of each of the food nutrients. It shall provide nutritious meals in an attract environment at reasonable prices.

To ensure success, Child Nutrition Programs shall enlist the assistance of the Financial Affairs Department, Purchasing Department, Maintenance Department and others, and shall apply strict business regulations and other Board policies.

Vendors selling non-essential foods on school property are not allowed during the school day, and this applies to sales immediately following the dismissal of students from classes.

Child Nutrition Programs is an educational supplement to the overall school program in addition to being a service unit. In cooperation with the Curriculum and Instruction Division and others, Child Nutrition Programs shall help provide experiences conducive to the development of good food attitudes and habits, and the students shall acquire a functional knowledge of health and nutrition.
