HEALTH LEAVE
Because the Board recognizes that its employees may become temporarily incapacitated and therefore unable to carry on their normal duties for extended periods of time, a policy of allowing leave for these reasons shall be in effect. An employee's accumulated sick leave may be claimed under this policy in accordance with other policies of the Board regarding sick leave.
EXTENDED HEALTH LEAVE
At the Board's discretion an individual may claim and be granted leave without pay beyond the time accumulated for sick leave for such time as the individual is certified by a physician to be physically or emotionally unable to perform the normal duties of the job (CODE OF ALABAMA, 16-8-25). If at the end of that period the employee continues to be certified as unable to perform the normal duties of the employee's job, then the employee may request an extension of the leave. All applicable employee benefits, including insurance coverage as guaranteed by contract, will be available to the employee under this policy.
Health leave for a non-tenured teacher cannot extend beyond the day prior to the end of the current one-year contract held by the teacher.
MATERNITY HEALTH LEAVE
Physical illness or emotional adjustment prior to or subsequent to childbirth may be cause for the Board to grant leave under this policy.
