SECONDARY EDUCATIONAL LEARNING CENTER

The Board is responsible for the education of the students within the school system, and because the Board considers academic instruction and the promotion of learning the vastly most important functions of the school system, it shall be the policy of the Jefferson County Board of Education to have a firm approach to students who are behaviorally disruptive. However, because every student in the Jefferson County School System is a valuable asset, efforts will be made to assist students who have behavioral or other school adjustment problems. Such efforts shall be made with a minimum of distraction to other students.

Often a student can benefit from a temporary assignment in a modified school program at another location. Therefore, one or more school zones shall have available, based upon prorata funding, and dependent on anticipated use, a Secondary Educational Learning Center as an alternative instructional method for junior and high school students. Upon agreement between schools, a principal may assign a student to another regular school program.

All students attending an alternate instructional program are responsible for their own transportation.

These options are not intended to be available for a student 16 years of age or more except upon the written recommendation of the local school administrators whose recommendation shall include a prescribed program based on the capability of the Secondary Educational Learning Center.

The Secondary Educational Learning Center shall determine an appropriate plan of adjustment as soon after entry as may be practicable.

A student who is 16 years of age or more may have only one opportunity to benefit from an alternative instructional disciplinary method during one academic year. A student, age 16 or older, whose behavior would again warrant such a method during the same year will be recommended for expulsion by the local school administrators, who shall document previous efforts. Expulsion is a permanent action by the Board.
