ADMISSION TO SCHOOL

In accordance with public school law, every child whose parent or guardian has a legal, physical residence in Jefferson County who is five years of age on or before September 1, and who has not reached the age of twenty-one on or before August 31 of the current school year shall be entitled to admission to Jefferson County schools at the opening of the schools for that school year or as soon as practicable thereafter.

Students under the age of six who transfer from the first grade in another state where early entrance is legal may be admitted to the Jefferson County system upon approval of the Board. An underage child who transfers to Alabama from the public school kindergarten in another state may be admitted to the Jefferson County system upon approval of the Board. An underage child who has moved into this state and has completed a mandated kindergarten program in another state shall be entitled to admission to a Jefferson County elementary school regardless of age.

Children who are deemed to be homeless, migrant, or limited English proficient will be enrolled in accordance with applicable state and federal law.
