CHALLENGES TO LIBRARY/MEDIA MATERIALS
The Board recognizes the responsibility of educators to select library/media materials which are consistent with established instructional goals and objectives.
Consideration shall be given to variety, levels of difficulty, diversity of appeal and perspective, and review of potentially controversial materials.
The Board further recognizes the right of any school district resident or educator to register criticism of any books or other materials. One who wishes to request reconsideration of such books and materials should complete a form which is available from the principal for that purpose. The completed form shall then be submitted by the principal to the School
Media Committee, which will review the request and render a recommendation back to the principal, who will in turn meet with the complainant for discussion. Upon complainant request, the principal may authorize an alternative selection in accordance with Board policy.
A written appeal, if necessary, may be made in writing to the Superintendent for transmittal to the District Materials Review Committee, which will study the request and submit its recommendation back to the Superintendent. The recommendation shall be submitted by the Superintendent to the Board for a final decision at its next formal meeting.
Challenged books or materials shall not be removed from general use while the request for reconsideration is being processed; however, the principal may choose to impose "special circulation status" on the item(s), thereby requiring parental permission for check-out by the student.
