 Young Author Showcase Winners


Minor High senior wins creative writing award
Nicole Sanders, a Minor High senior, rewrote the ending of her favorite book "Little Red Riding Hood" by Charles Perrault and won recognition for her creative writing by UAB Young Author's Showcase.  Pictured are Carolyn Blackwell, interim deputy superintendent, Board President Jennifer Parsons, and Superintendent Phil Hammonds.  She was recognized at the JefCoEd board meeting on January 28.

 


Bottenfield Middle's Ashley Tran is a Young Author Showcase winner
Ashley Tran, an eighth grader at Bottenfield Middle,  rewrote the ending of a favorite book "Arthur's Pet" by Deathco Cotorino and was recognized by the University of Alabama at Birmingham's YAS, Young Author's Showcase.  Pictured are Carolyn Blackwell, deputy superintendent of curriculum and instruction, Board President Jennifer Parsons, and Superintendent Phil Hammonds.

 


Antonio Baker wins for creative writing
Irondale Middle eighth grader Antonio Baker rewrote the ending for his favorite book "Harry Potter and the Alternate Ending" by J. K. Rowling and was recognized at the January 28th JefCoEd Board meeting for his creativity as a UAB Young Author Showcase winner.  Pictured are Carolyn Blackwell, interim deputy superintendent, Board President Jennifer Parsons, and Superintendent Phil Hammonds.

 


Erwin seventh grader Nadiyah Dandy wins as a young author
Nadiyah Dandy rewrote the ending for her favorite book "Marked House of Night" by P. C. and Kristin Cast and was recognized for her creativity at the Young Author Showcase sponsored by UAB.  Pictured are Carolyn Blackwell, interim deputy superintendent for curriculum and instruction, and Superintendent Phil Hammonds.  She was recognized by the Board on January 28.

 


West Jefferson fifth grader wins creative writing award
Shelby Bradley, a fifth grader at West Jefferson Elementary, rewrote an alternative ending for her favorite book "The Invention of Hugo Cabret" by Brian Selznick and was named a Young Author Showcase winner by UAB's writing competition.  Pictured with her are interim deputy superintendent Carolyn Blackwell, Board President Jennifer Parsons, and Superintendent Phil Hammonds.

 


Hillview fifth grader Jonathan Scott honored
Fifth grader Jonathan Scott rewrote the ending of his favorite book "The Incredibles" by Michael Giacchino and was a winner for his creativity in the UAB  Young Author Showcase competition.  Pictured are interim deputy superintendent Carolyn Blackwell, Board President Jennifer Parsons, and Superintendent Phil Hammonds.  He was recognized on January 28 at the Board meeting.

 


Oak Grove fourth grader wins for creative writing
Cody Harris, an Oak Grove Elementary fourth grader, rewrote the ending of his favorite book "Danger at the Breaker" by Catherine A. Clay Third grader Nikolai Cantley is Young Author Showcase winner 
Clay Elementary third grader Nikolai Cantley rewrote his favorite book "Poppy and Rye" by Avi and won a YAS, Young Author Showcase award sponsored by the University of Alabama at Birmingham.  Pictured with him are Carolyn Blackwell, interim deputy superintendent of curriculum and instruction, Board President Jennifer Parsons, and Superintendent Phil Hammonds.  The recognition occurred at the January 28 board meeting.

 

 

Eight out of the nine winners of YAS, Young Authors' Showcase, were honored at the January 28 JefCoEd meeting.  Not in attendance was Hueytown High junior Jessica Redwine.  She rewrote an ending for her favorite book by John Steinbeck "Of Mice and Men" and was also a winner as a creative writer.
