Minor High School senior Joel Stevenson wins Berea College award

Joel Stevenson, a Minor High School senior, recently received the 2011 Berea College Pinnacle Scholars Award of Excellence.  The award honors a high school student's work in the field of science, music, or community service.  Joel was honored for his community service and his win now makes him an automatic nominee for a full-ride scholarship to Berea College.  He was one of 500 nominated for the Pinnacle Scholars Award of Excellence and all award winners are considered for a $100,000 scholarship to Berea College, which includes a job for earning money for books, room and board.

During high school Joel had many diverse community projects.  He helped with the massive community tornado cleanup in April and delivered food through Pratt City Disaster Relief Center and the local Red Cross.  Joel helped coordinate a facelift for the Adamsville Elementary School playground.  For two summers he has volunteered at the BREAD Center operated by Bethel Baptist Church, which runs a full-day summer camp for young children from 6:30 a.m. until 6 p.m. daily which includes reinforcement of instruction in Spanish, music, math, reading, physical education and field trips.  Joel is also an active member of the Hands on Birmingham Network.

Yearround service from Joel at his own Greater Shiloh Baptist Church includes regular nursery/childcare duties for the Teeny Tiny Angels at his church. As a middle school student Joel was active as a People to People Ambassador in England, France, and Wales.  Joel is a linebacker at Minor High School football team and also plays community basketball. His career goal is to become a physical therapist.
