Super ScholarsThe 20th annual Superintendent’s 100 Super Scholars awards program was held Tuesday, March 7, 2009 in the Bruno Great Hall at Birmingham Southern College. National Math and Science InitiativeOn Wednesday, March 4, 2009, Tabitha Robinson and Robyn Blake, Senior AP students at Hueytown High School were honored for their Alabama third place finish in the NMSI (National Math and Science Initiative). MJHS GroundbreakingIt was a red letter day on October 6 when Mortimer Jordan community spaded dirt to replace a building built in the 1920s. Hueytown HS GroundbreakingA huge crowd assembles for the groundbreaking for the new Hueytown High School. Two former principals and the current one, center Gayle Gober helped spade some dirt at the ceremony on October 7. New Immunization RequiredBeginning with the 2010-2011 school year, a dose of Tdap vaccine will be required for Alabama students ages 11 or 12 years old entering 6th grade. This vaccine protects against 3 serious bacterial diseases: Tetanus, Diptheria and Pertussis. LEA District Improvement LetterThe Jefferson County School System is in LEA School Improvement for not making Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) for the past two years. Attached is a letter from Dr. Hammonds explaining the improvement efforts of the school district. Open Letter to ParentsBeginning on Tuesday, Sept. 7th, the student attendance at all Jefferson County Schools will be recorded and an average daily attendance will be tabulated. This average daily attendance is the number used to calculate the number of teacher units we receive for the next school year. It is also part of the Annual Yearly Progress (AYP) report used to measure if a school makes AYP Makeup DaysStudents will make up the day lost on September 6 due to Tropical Storm Lee on the first scheduled inclement weather day on the JefCoEd calendar, October 21.
