DEBRA ROBERTSON

GETS FINANCIAL GRADUATE CERTIFICATE

Debra Robertson is the first graduate from Jefferson County to receive her graduate certificate from the Alabama Association of School Business Officials (AASBO).
She was one of 32 graduates from 30 different systems in Alabama to receive this certification.  Today,  there are 100 finance officers in Alabama with this certification.
It is a two- to three- year commitment because courses are given three times a year only at one location, Tuscaloosa.
She took 54 different courses ranging from financial planning, fair labor standards, school law to contract information.

Diane McDaniel
, of Johnson Elementary,  was chosen Sam's Club Irondale teacher of the year.  She received $1,000, a dozen roses, an oversized check, and a personal Sam's vest.  There were 3,000 competitors for the award.
Cheryl Perry Slaughter, of Gardendale Elementary, won the northern area Wal-Mart teacher of the year.  She also won $1,000 for her classroom.

    Linda Herold, resource supervisor, was the outstanding alumna in physical education at UAB's School of Education's honors day.
Two Toyota Teachers
Anita Colley of Oak Grove and Kay Harris of Shades Valley will spend two weeks in Japan this fall in the Toyota International Teacher Program.

NEWS FROM OAK GROVE
Oak Grove sophomore Jenafer Coston has won a scholarship to attend Bevill State College this summer for college credit.  She was won many academic honors and has two degree interests, biomedical engineering and veterinary medicine.

Career Tech State Wins
Terri Sellers of Hueytown High  and Randell Smith of Pinson Valley  have two of the Ten most outstanding marketing education programs in Alabama for 2003.  
Mortimer Jordan's business ed department has been chosen one of the 10 most outstanding business ed programs in Alabama for 2003.

Class Act! BIG, BIG Success
Vic Fichtner, speech and theatre supervisor, says the 11 elementary or middle schools who participated in the pilot art education project were pleased and  excited at its success.
Two experienced theatre students from county high schools were paired with school each  to provide  drama for the younger students and a teaching  opportunity for  the high schoolers.
Schools involved were Bagley Jr, Cahaba Heights, Clay, Corner, Gresham, Hewitt-Trussville, Hueytown, Irondale, Leeds, Minor High, and Pittman.

MAKING PROM A MEMORY      
Exceptional ed made magic  for 350 special ed students.  They held their first prom in May.  Area high school students applied make-up, helped get gowns and tuxedos, pinned corsages on, arranged hair, and calmed jittery nerves.  Project leaders included Treva McDougal, Wanda Westbrook, and  Anna Smith.

AP TEACHERS
Susan Caraway of Hewitt Trussville-High was named the UAB's AP English  teacher and Marlee Neel of Hueytown High is the alternate.
MINOR'S ACADEMIC BANQUET
For 10 years,  Minor High has honored the top 20 senior, junior, sophomores.  This was the second time to honor the  freshmen.  Candace Heard coordinated.
